Le 10th ROYAL WELSH FUSILIERS A DELVILLE WOOD - 20/21 juillet 1916
Le 10th RWF faisait partie de la 76th Brigade de la 3rd Division,laquelle arriva dans la Somme au début de juillet 1916 en provenance du Nord de la France. Le bataillon ne fut pas engagé dans les actions de la 5th Divison à Bazentin et Longueval, du 14 au 18 juillet. Le 10th RWF reçut l'ordre de prendre position dans le Bois Delville le 20 juillet (sans reconnaissance) et d'y faire une poussée depuis Princes Street. Comme de nombreuses troupes (dont les vestiges de la Brigade sud-africaine) étaient engagées dans une si petite zone, ordre fut donné qu'aucun coup de feu ne devait être tiré durant la progression. Atteignant le bois à 02 h 45, ils furent égarés par le guide de la 53rd Brigade (certains déclarèrent que celui-ci était saoul) et dirigés sur Buchanan Street en plein sur les lignes allemandes. Soudainement, tout le bois sembla être rempli d'Allemands. Les Gallois firent face à un violent feu de mtrailleuses et beaucoup d'entre eux furent encerclés . Un combat à courte portée et à corps à corps s'ensuivit au cours duquel les Corporal J.J Davis (companie D) et Private O.A. Hill (compagnie C) allaient gagner la Victoria Cross
Le bataillon fut relevé le 21 à 03 h 00 et séjourna dans Breslau Trench (entre Carnoy et Montauban) jusqu'au 25 juillet. Il combattit de nouveau dans la Somme à la mi-août, au sud de Guillemont, y perdant 224 hommes. Le 10th R.W.F. a subi une perte de 228 hommes dans le Bois Delville, dont les 91 hommes suivant, tués, disparus ou décédés de leurs blessures, et inhumés ou commémorés en France. Ne figurent pas dans cette liste les éventuels blessés ayant succombés en Grande Bretagne durant ou après la guerre. |
