THE 8th BLACK WATCH

IN LONGUEVAL AND DELVILLE WOOD - 14th/21st July 1916

The 8th Black Watch was part of the 26th Brigade of the 9th (Scottish) Division which was in reserve at the opening of the Battle of the Somme. Its commanding Officer was the Lieutenant-Colonel C.W.E. GORDON.

The Battalion was in line at Montauban and in Bernafay Wood from the 8th to the 11th July, then in bivouac in Carnoy. During this period the 8th Black Watch sustained 24 fatal casualties.

During the attack of the 14th July, the 8th Black Watch was at the far right of the line of the 9th Scottish Division, with the 10th Argylls on its left. The operation was based on the surprise caused by a night attack and a short bombardment preceding the assault.

At 03. 25, after a five minutes bombardment, the units sprang of which some with the sound of the bagpipes. The Germans, at first completely surprised, reacted quickly : there was fierce hand to hand combat in the village, but by midday, the southern part of Longueval was in the possession of the Scottish Soldiers. The losses had been heavy. Indeed, short preliminary bombardment, although violent one, had not destroyed in-depth defenses and had not destroyed the tunnels. Moreover, the destruction by the bombardement allowed more cover for the defenders.

The 8th Black Watch encountered great difficulties in front of a machine-gun nest in the south-est corner of Longueval, supported by two field guns positioned in wood. They eventually succeeded at the end of the afternoon and the edge of wood was occupied. Outposts were installed further in the wood where a certain amount of enemy action continued. These outposts were relieved by the South Africans on the 15th July.

Two companies of the Battalion took position in the village and strengthened its line which remained unchanged until the German attack on the 18th July.

At 8.00am on the 18th July, a bombardment of a unprecedented severity was open on the wood and Longueval. Every part of the area was searched and smothered by shells until 3.30pm. The 3rd Division was expelled from the northern part of Longueval. The strong points built by the Scottish prevented the capture of the whole village by the Germans. At 6.00pm, on Highland Battalions C.O.'s initiative, all men available were gathered and the 8th Black Watch, 7th Seaforths and 5th Camerons launched a counter-attack which allowed to restore the line in the village and took contact again with the remains of the South African Brigade in Delville Wood. Many men of the 8th Black Watch reported as Missing in action during this day were lost during a impetuous pursuit of the Germans in the wood.

The remains of the Battalion was relieved on the 21st in the morning by elements of the 10th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and posted in Carnoy.
