LE 8th BLACK WATCH A LONGUEVAL ET DELVILLE WOOD 14/21 juillet 1916 Le 8th Black Watch faisait partie de la 26th Brigade de la 9th (Scottish) Division qui était en réserve à l'ouverture de la bataille de la Somme. Son commandant était le Lieutenant-Colonel C.W.E. GORDON. Le Battalion fut en ligne à Montauban dans dans le Bois de Bernafay du 8 au 11 juillet, puis bivouaqua à Carnoy. Durant cette période, le 8th Black Watch eut 24 hommes tués. Durant l'attaque du 14 juillet, le 8th Black Watch était à l'extrême-droite de la ligne de la 9th Scottish Division, avec le 10th Argylls sur sa gauche. L'opération était basée sur la surprise causée par une attaque nocturne et un court bombardement préliminaire à l'assaut. A 03h 25, après un bombardement d'artillerie de cinq minutes, les unités s'élancèrent, certaines accompagnées du son des cornemuses. Les Allemands, d'abord complètement surpris, réagirent promptement : il y eu de furieux combats au corps à corps dans le village mais, à midi, la partie sud de Longueval était entre les mains des Ecossais. Les pertes avaient été élevées. En effet, le bombardement préliminaire, bien que violent, n'avait ni détruit les défenses profondes ni les tunnels les reliant. De plus les destructions occasionnées amélioraient les positions des défenseurs dissimulés dans les ruines. Le 8th Black Watch rencontra degrandes difficultés face à un nid de mitrailleuses, situé dans le coin sud-est de Longueval, et soutenu par deux canons de campagne positionnés dans le bois. Ils réussirent à en venir à bout à la fin de l'après-midi et la lisière du bois fut occupée. Des avant-postes furent installés plus profondément dans le bois où était constatée une certaine activité ennemie. Ces avant-postes furent relevés par les Sud Africains le 15 juillet. Deux compagnies du Battalion prirent position dans le village et renforcèrent par des travaux la ligne qui demeura inchangée jusqu'à l'attaque allemande du 18 juillet. A 08h00, un bombardement d'une fureur sans précédent s'abattit sur le bois et Longueval. Aucune partie du secteur ne fut épargnée par les obus jusqu'à 15h30. La 3rd Division fut chassée de la partie nord de Longueval. Les points fortifiés construits par les Ecossais évitèrent la capture de tout le village par les Allemands. A 18 h 00, sur l'initiative des commandants des bataillons de Highlanders en ligne, tous les hommes disponibles furent rassemblés et les 8th Black Watch, 7th Seaforths et 5th Camerons lancèrent une contre-attaque qui permit de restaurer la ligne dans le village et de reprendre contact avec les vestiges de la Brigade sud-africaine dans le bois Delville. Beaucoup de Black Watch portés disparus ce jour-là le furent durant une impétueuse poursuite des Allemands dans le bois. Les vestiges du bataillon furent relevés le 21 juillet au matin par des éléments du 10th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders puis se positionnèrent à Carnoy. JOURNAL DE MARCHE DU 8th BLACK WATCH- JUILLET 1916 (en anglais) Le bataillon fut de nouveau en action dans la Somme en octobre 1916 devant la Butte de Warlencourt, subissant la perte de 203 hommes dont 57 tués. Le 8th Black Watch perdit 568 hommes à Longueval et Delville Wood dont 137 hommes tués, blessés mortellement ou portés disparus, et enterrés ou commémorés en France ou au Royaume-Uni (ne figurent pas les probables blessés ayant succombés à leurs blessures durant ou après la guerre). |
