Was in command of the troops in Delville Wood until his was wounded and evacuated.
Awarded the CMG for his leadership at Delville Wood and promoted to temporary Brigadier-General.
Left the South African Brigade in October 1917 and commanded the 8th brigade of the 3rd Division.
He took the command of the South African Brigade after Marrieres Wood and held his post until the end of the War.
Awarded CB, DSO. Mentioned in Despatches six times . Awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre and the Belgian Ordre de Leopold, the Croix de Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur (France).

Transferred later to the Royal Flying Corps, flying as observer-gunner in DH4 in the 18 Squadron. The 15th July 1917, the following day of his commission, he was shot down, wounded and taken prisoner. Rapatriated on the 15th January 1918, his right leg was amputated a week later.
